Islamic Education under the Colonial Rule: Effects and Prospects in Northern Nigeria

    Abstract: 

    Islamic education can be traced back to the period of the Prophet (SAW). Islamic education is an obligation upon every believer, hence, worship cannot be performed without knowledge. This paper is an attempt to explain the significance of Islamic education. Therefore, the paper discusses the concept of education and Islamic education, development of Islamic education under the Prophet (SAW), the contribution of Sahaba to Islamic education, the development of Islamic education in Nigeria and Islam under Colonial Rule and the impact of colonial rule upon the Muslims in Nigeria. The method followed in conducting this research is qualitative, using the books of Islamic education, the Quran, the prophetic traditions and history of education in Nigeria. The research found out that Islamic education suffered a lot under the colonial masters. There were no any positive success to count under the colonial rules. The paper recommends that the Muslims should wake up from their sleeping point to assist in the development of Islamic religion. The paper ends with conclusion.
